My First Castor Oil Pack — A Major Shift in My Life

I’ve known about castor oil for years. I first learned about its benefits in herbal medicine school and heard countless stories from practitioners about how powerful it can be—for digestion, detox, inflammation, and so much more. But for the longest time, I never actually used it myself. I had a bottle sitting in my cabinet for months (maybe longer), and it just… sat there.

Until one night at 2:30 a.m., something shifted.

I was a couple of weeks into a gentle parasite cleanse and at the same time got a desire to work through some physical tension. I’ve carried this tightness in my gut and upper body for as long as I can remember—neck, shoulders, headaches—and more recently, it started spreading to my lower back and hips, especially during my cycle. Recently it came to my attention that this tension possibly was stemming from some old emotional layers that I thought I dealt with years ago. I asked God to show me how to release whatever it was-IF it was something causing my tension that lead to my headaches. I ended up taking two doses of homeopathics specific to where and how my tension was showing up and then I waited a few days and it kind of mellowed out.

So on this particular night, I felt the nudge. I tore up an old cotton shirt, poured some castor oil on it, and laid it across my liver. No heating pad, nothing fancy—just me, some oil, and asking very matter of fact for God to help my body to release whatever it wanted while trying to tell my body it was safe and it could let whatever was causing my tension to leave. I know-super weird-but this is how it happened.

Within minutes I felt warmth. Then bubbling in my gut. A sensation in my left hip. Then a wave of heaviness through the back of my neck and into my head. What followed was an unexpected, profound emotional release. I actually had a moment of hearing a clear thought—as if someone was in my head saying something loud and clear. And it definitely matched up with what had been revealed to me about my infant years, years before. It was like my body let out a stored memory or imprint I didn’t even realize I’d been holding onto. Moments later, my left arm went super heavy, like a dead weight, and then it moved down and out my left ring and pinky finger.

I won’t get into all the details (those may come later), but let’s just say that one simple castor oil pack became the key that helped unlock something much deeper—something I now believe had been stored in my body since childhood. It connected dots I hadn’t even realized were part of the same picture: chronic tension in my gut, neck, and shoulders that led to headaches throughout childhood… and then, more recently, monthly cycle headaches that started about five years ago after a series of added stresses and traumatic circumstances (that I truly thought I had already moved past).

These headaches always felt like they were coming from knots running down my neck, back, hip, and sometimes even into my left foot. Now, looking back, I’m realizing my “bucket” had probably been full for a long time—and those added stresses just made it overflow. It triggered these headaches right when my body was already more sensitive: during my cycle, when it’s naturally trying to detox and reset. I can now see it wasn’t just physical… it was friction between my body trying to detox emotionally as well. Patterns I thought I had healed were still stored inside me.

My body had been trying to tell me: “Something in here wants out. But it’s trapped.” I had no clue this was even a thing. And that night with the castor oil pack? It’s like I finally got the wrapping off—and whatever memory or imprint that had been held in there got a chance to move.

And guess what—my period came a few days later, and for the first time in five years, I had no trace of a headache even wanting to start. The tension I usually had was not there anymore. If I tried to imagine it, I could feel a hint of it—but I was looking for it. It was seriously amazing.

The next morning, something strange but kind of amazing happened. My bowel movement had a distinct smell—like burnt hair or ashes. I’ve read that this can sometimes happen when your body is finally releasing deeply stored toxins, possibly ones that have been stuck for years. It made me wonder… could my body have been holding onto not just physical waste, but emotional imprints too? Is it possible that memories or imprints—even ones from your childhood that you cannot remember —can be stored in the body like that?

I don’t know for sure, but the timing felt way too aligned to ignore. I’m not claiming it’s all gone for good—but something definitely shifted. It didn’t even try to show up this cycle.

This wasn’t just about castor oil—it was about creating space for my body to release what it was finally ready to let go of. Castor oil was just a tool that helped move it at the right time. And in my case I feel like it released something from my liver but also did something within my nervous system to help my body release.

What Makes Castor Oil So Medicinal?

Castor oil is made from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant and is especially rich in a fatty acid called ricinoleic acid—this is where the magic comes from. Ricinoleic acid is a rare compound that gives castor oil its powerful therapeutic properties:

Anti-inflammatory – Helps reduce inflammation in tissues, joints, and organs (especially helpful for chronic pain, menstrual cramps, or gut inflammation).

Lymphatic flow – Stimulates the movement of lymph, your body’s waste-removal system, which supports detox and immune health.

Liver support – When applied over the liver, castor oil may help support detoxification, bile flow, and hormonal balance.

Antimicrobial – Has mild antibacterial and antifungal effects, which can support skin and gut health.

Nervous system calming – Many people report feeling a deep sense of calm and groundedness after using castor oil packs. This may be due to its impact on the vagus nerve and parasympathetic nervous system.

And because the oil is absorbed through the skin, it works gently but deeply—without having to pass through the digestive system.

What Is a Castor Oil Pack?

A castor oil pack is a cloth soaked in castor oil, typically placed over the liver or abdomen to support detoxification, reduce inflammation, and stimulate lymphatic flow. It’s been used for centuries in traditional medicine and is known to:

•Support liver and lymphatic function

•Relieve constipation and digestive discomfort

•Calm the nervous system

•Reduce inflammation and pain

•Help release stored emotions (yes, really)

You can use a flannel or cotton cloth, add heat if desired (though it’s not necessary), and lie down for about 30–60 minutes while your body does its thing. Some people use a pack several times a week, others once in a while. Listen to your body.

My Advice If You’re Curious

Don’t overthink it. Just start. It doesn’t have to be perfect—I used a cut-up T-shirt. What matters is creating a quiet space for your body to receive. Whether you’re supporting your liver, healing your gut, or just looking to unwind, castor oil packs are a gentle but powerful tool.

And sometimes, they become the thing that finally helps you let go—not just physically, but emotionally too.

That said—healing is a very bio-individual journey, and your body knows what to do and when. I personally believe God intended us to live hand in hand with medicinal plants to be a part of our everyday life and aid in detoxification—both physically and emotionally. He knows what we need, what we’re ready for, and what His purpose is for us along the way, timing-wise. So ask Him as you move forward with any healing journey, and I’m asking that as you do, He will give you little nuggets that show you more of who He is, but also set you free more and more to do what you were put here for.

There’s more to this story, and maybe I’ll share it someday in a different format. But for now, if your body’s been whispering (or shouting) that it’s time to release something, maybe this is your sign.
